With Micah Owings still banged up -- he skipped his scheduled start because of a groin injury -- and Juan Cruz nursing an oblique injury, the Diamondbacks stayed with a 13-pitcher roster on Wednesday.
However, once the pitching staff gets healthy, calling up an offensive player from Triple-A Tucson seems likely.
The frontrunner would seem to be speedster Emilio Bonifacio. He is a natural second baseman but played in the outfield in winter ball, a place he could fill in for an injured Eric Byrnes (hamstring).
Manager Bob Melvin said the Diamondbacks are still determining a course of action with Byrnes, who has been hampered by the injury all season, and that season-ending surgery is a possibility.
Bonifacio could take his place in left field and lead off for Arizona if that's the direction the team decides to take. Bonifacio was expected to take over at second base next year if Orlando Hudson isn't re-signed but could get regular work in the big leagues earlier than projected.
Bonifacio is hitting .306 with one home run, 29 RBI and 17 stolen bases at Triple-A Tucson. Conor Jackson will get most of the at-bats for Arizona in left field for now, but he is a natural first baseman.
BREWERS 4, DIAMONDBACKS 3: Mike Cameron hit a go-ahead single with one out in the top of the ninth inning as the Brewers rallied to beat the Diamondbacks. Milwaukee scored a run in each of the last four innings. Justin Upton tied the game with a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth.

Outside of weak hitting, the bullpen is probably the biggest problem the Diamondbacks have. It also might be the hardest to figure out what to do to solve the problem.
